Shortly after setting off from the bridge, we met a party of four hunters on horseback and I began to worry they were camped at MY spot. Horse tracks heading down the Waptus lakeshore trail seemed to confirm my paranoid fears – I was going to have to camp in the buggy forest after all!

As I strapped back on the heavy pack, I began arguing with myself; the peninsula camp was not really a good site for a horse party ... only to start fretting that maybe that was so, but some other hiker had beaten me to my little plot of heaven.

After all I had suffered these last few days, I feared I was going to find someone occupying my safe-haven and then what was I going to do?

As I pushed through the last few yards of brush down to the lake shore, I felt an incredible joy: all my fears were for nothing. I had this wonderful camp to myself!
