Post-Hike
Well, M&D did come up as promised! It was great – I saw Mickey first, on the bridge as I was headed across the river to go potty at around 2 PM. I welcomed them to my humble abode and then we moved up to a larger site that included a fire-pit. Bless their hearts, they brought up a huge steak, potatoes, corn, and even a cold beer. After another nice soak in the springs, I fully enjoyed that beer.
We had a marvelous gourmet meal and I went to bed a happy camper. The next morning they hiked up with me to Red Pass where we said goodbye and I continued on my way to Stevens Pass. Sadly, Mickey went home with her people. I didn't have any dog food and they hadn’t packed extra, so it was best for Micki.
The stretch between Red and Indian passes is really incredible. I shot two rolls of film. The open hillsides were blanketed with rich red and orange foliage, while Glacier Peak stood highlighted by bright blue skies. It was just stunning.
I reached Indian Pass at about 6:30 PM and found a couple camped there already. They said the nearest water was a half-mile away. Then the guy pointed up the trail and said a hiker had told them there was water about 3/4 to 1 mile up the trail. I thought, hey no problem!
Well, at 7:30 PM I still hadn't found any water and it was starting to get dark. I ended up pitching my tent in a very dirty camp site on an exposed little ridge. The clouds really came rolling in and it even rained a few drops during the night. I went to bed without dinner, as well as without water.
